John Roberts has sent some photographs of Devauden taken by his grandfather, Alfred Roberts, in 1943. Alfred lived in Devauden before emigrating to the United States in 1911. Alfred Roberts’ father, Thomas, was a stone mason and was involved in construction of Beaufort House in Devauden.

My grandfather, Alfred Roberts, was born and raised in Devauden prior to emigrating to the Unites States in 1911. In 1943, my uncle Bob was stationed in the UK and Grandfather Alfred returned home to the Devauden area, and he and Bob visited several relatives that were still living there. The attached photos are from that trip. Unfortunately, my grandfather died of a stroke during that trip, so I never got to know him since I was born in 1953. My Uncle Bob was a cultural anthropology professor at Roosevelt University in Chicago and he kept genealogical records for the family. I found the attached photos in our family papers and thought there may be some interest in the buildings in the backgrounds of the photos. The citations were written on the backs of the photos. According to Uncle Bob’s notes, Alfred Roberts’ father, Thomas, was a stone mason and was involved in construction of the building in one of the photos referred to as Beaufort House. I have been told that it is across a lane from the former Mason Arms Pub. Someday, I hope to journey across the pond and visit the Devauden area. Best Regards, John Roberts |
