Record numbers of runners attended the fourth May Day Cross Country races at Devauden.
324 children and adults took part. The 10k race was won by Andrew Stephens of Monross Trailblazers in 37.42 just three seconds ahead of Robert Gordon of Mynydd Du. The two were well clear of the field but failed to break the course record which stands at 36.05.
Nicola Brookland from Bristol was the clear winner of the female race in 40.25. Second was Katherine Matthew in 42.02. Katherine however retains the female course record set last year.
The local runner trophy went to Vanessa Ball of Devauden (54.03) and Jonathan Carter of Kilgwrrwg (43.34)
The over 70 category in the 10k saw Rob James finish in an incredible 54.08, while Daphne Austerberry came home in 1.22.54
Everyone finishing in less than an hour won a t-shirt although stocks ran out before everyone was rewarded due to the high quality of the field. Those that missed out will have a T shirt posted to them
The children’s races were a fantastic success with 42 runners competing in the 1k for 7 and 8 year olds. In total 88 children, 14 and under, competed plus a huge number of 6 and under who completed the 50m dash. Again numbers were well above expectation and those who did not receive a medal will get one posted to them.
The event was followed by a traditional May Day celebration on the Devauden Village Green with dancing around a Maypole to the folk music of “Life of Riley.”
This proved very popular and a magnificent spectacle.
